The liberal arts and sciences
A classical education gives students a broad foundation in literature, history, mathematics, the natural sciences, languages, and the arts. Children need knowledge of the world and practice in reading, writing, speaking, and reasoning to make independent judgments.
At Oxford Classical, the planned course of study will be cumulative: early mastery of reading, writing, and arithmetic prepares students for more demanding work in later grades.
Moral and intellectual development
Teachers will expect students to tell the truth, listen carefully, work steadily, and treat others with respect. Books and historical study give students opportunities to consider questions of courage, justice, duty, and friendship. The aim is to build knowledge and the habits needed to use it well.
Civic responsibility and informed patriotism
Students should study the American founding, the institutions of self-government, and the country’s achievements and failures honestly. This study should prepare them to understand their rights and responsibilities and to participate thoughtfully in civic life.
Oxford Classical is being developed as a public school. Its educational program will focus on instruction, not partisan advocacy.
